Using the crushed brick, I collaborated with my peer, Dalia Scolnick, who specializes in natural dyes, to investigate how the brick powder could be used as a dye. Together, we experimented with incorporating the powder into boiling water to create dye baths for a range of fabric samples.

Drawing on the outcomes of these material tests, I selected linen for the final piece for the flat and refined the dyeing process accordingly. The fabric was first treated with an alum mordant before being immersed in the brick dye bath for three hours. Once dyed, the linen was washed on a cold cycle and air-dried before being passed to Zoë Tynan-Campbell, who sewed the finished curtains for the flat.
